Hari Raya Puasa is approaching soon and all our Muslim friends are busying their preparations as this is one of their biggest festivals! It is also known as the festival that marks the end of one month of fasting from foods and drinks from Subuh until Maghrib.. In Malaysia, normally our Malay friends will invite their friends to their home (so called “open house”) and share the happiness of celebration together.

And here, we have listed out top 5 things that we love about Hari Raya Puasa!

1. Seasonal food
It is undeniable that we all love Malay food as it’s spicy and savoury! Here are some famous Hari Raya foods which are always Malaysian’s favourites:

– Ketupat

These delicious packed treats are somewhat of a symbol of Hari Raya. Rice grains are filled inside weaved coconut palm leaves, and boiled till the rice inside is cooked. The ketupat usually is often served with delicious rendang or serunding.

– Dodol

It is chewy, sweet and sticky of course! Dodol is made of coconut milk, palm sugar and glutinous rice flour. And it comes in different flavours such as coconut, durian, pandan and more.

– Kuih Raya

Tart nenas, kuih makmur, kuih bangkit, honey cornflakes, kek lapis, kuih almond London, kuih kelapa and so much more! *mouth-watering already!*

2. New garments

What would Hari Raya be without new colourful Raya outfits? Definitely NO! Every family will buy several traditional Malay outfits such as Baju Kurung and Baju Melayu to celebrate this festival. And some of the families will have their own theme colour!

3. Duit raya / Green Envelope
For Malay, especially those who are married, they will hand out money in green envelopes to the kids and teenagers. The reason behind the green colour is simply its association with the Islamic paradise. The idea of handing out green envelopes is based on the Islamic concept of zakat, where every Muslim is required to provide at least 2.5% mainly to the needy.

4. Hari Raya songs
You can hear the Hari Raya songs wherever you are since bulan Ramadan! And we believe that all the Malaysians know the Hari Raya songs very well! Below are the top 3 Hari Raya songs (in random order):

No 1: Selamat Hari Raya – by Saloma
Selamat aidil fitri
Kepada saudara serta saudari
Setahun hanya sekali
Merayakan hari yang mulia ini

No 2: Balik Kampung – by Sudirman
